Why isn't my website appearing on Google?

You've built your website, published it and waited for Google to find it.

But when you search for your business, nothing appears.

It can be frustrating — but there are several reasons why this can happen.

1. Google hasn't found or indexed your website yet

Google needs to discover and crawl your website before it can appear in search results.

If your website is new, this can take time.

Google Search Console can help you check whether your pages have been discovered and indexed, and whether there are any problems preventing them from appearing.

2. Your website isn't optimised for what people are searching for

Google needs to understand what your business does and which searches your website should appear for.

If your pages contain vague wording or don't clearly describe your services, Google may struggle to understand where you belong.

Your website needs clear, useful content that matches what your potential customers are actually searching for.

3. You're competing for very competitive searches

Even if Google knows your website exists, that doesn't mean you'll appear near the top.

For example, ranking for something like “web designer UK” is considerably harder than targeting a more specific search relevant to your business and location.

Sometimes being more specific is the smarter approach.

4. Your website may have technical SEO problems

There could be issues affecting how Google accesses or understands your website.

These might include:

  • Pages accidentally blocked from search engines

  • Poor internal linking

  • Missing or incorrect page titles

  • Technical errors

  • Slow performance

  • Poor mobile experience

  • Sitemap problems

These aren't always obvious just by looking at your website.

5. Your website doesn't have enough authority yet

Google considers many signals when deciding which websites to rank.

Links and mentions from other reputable websites can help establish your site's credibility.

For a small local business, your Google Business Profile, local listings, reviews and relevant local mentions can also be important.

First, find out what's actually happening

If your website isn't appearing on Google, don't immediately assume you need to rebuild it or spend a fortune on SEO.

First, find out why.

Google Search Console can tell you a lot about how Google sees your website, while a proper SEO review can identify issues that might be holding it back.

At Orange Hippo, we look at SEO as part of the bigger picture — making sure your website is not only visible, but also clear, useful and designed to turn visitors into enquiries.

Being found on Google is important. But being found by the right people is what really matters.
