It's easy to judge a website by how it looks.

But a good-looking website isn't necessarily a good-performing website.

Your website exists for a reason. It should help people find you, understand what you offer and, ultimately, help grow your business.

So how do you know if it's actually working?

1. It's attracting the right visitors

Traffic is useful, but relevant traffic is what matters.

If you're getting hundreds of visitors but very few are potential customers, the number itself doesn't tell you much.

Your website should be attracting people who are genuinely interested in what you offer.

2. Visitors understand what you do quickly

Imagine you've never heard of your business before.

When you land on the homepage, can you immediately answer:

What do they do? Who is it for? And why should I choose them?

If the answer isn't obvious within a few seconds, there's a good chance visitors are leaving before they explore further.

3. People are taking action

A working website should encourage visitors to do something.

That might be:

  • Making an enquiry

  • Calling you

  • Requesting a quote

  • Booking a consultation

  • Signing up

  • Downloading something useful

You don't necessarily need hundreds of enquiries.

But if nobody is taking the next step, it's worth asking why.

4. You're getting enquiries from the right people

Not all enquiries are equal.

If your website is attracting people who understand your service, fit your ideal customer and are genuinely interested in buying, that's a much better sign than simply having lots of contact form submissions.

Quality matters more than quantity.

5. You can see what's happening

Your website shouldn't be a black box.

Tools such as Google Analytics and Google Search Console can help you understand where visitors come from, what they're looking for and what they do when they arrive.

That information can reveal problems that aren't obvious from simply looking at your website.

So, is your website working?

Don't judge it purely on how professional it looks.

Ask yourself:

Is it attracting the right people?

Do they understand what I offer?

Do they trust my business?

Are they taking the next step?

Is it generating the kind of enquiries I actually want?

If you're not sure, that's probably worth investigating.
