How do I improve my website's SEO?
SEO (search engine optimisation) can sound complicated, but the basic idea is fairly simple:
Help Google understand your website, and help your potential customers find useful answers to what they're searching for.
You don't necessarily need to become an SEO expert to make meaningful improvements.
1. Start with what your customers are searching for
Think about the words and questions your potential customers actually use.
If you provide gardening services, for example, your customers might search for:
“garden maintenance in [town]”
rather than simply:
“gardening services.”
The more closely your website matches what people are actually searching for, the more useful it becomes to both visitors and search engines.
2. Make each page clear
Every important page should have a clear purpose.
Your headings, page title and content should make it obvious what the page is about.
Don't try to make one page rank for everything you offer.
One page, one clear purpose is a good starting point.
3. Create genuinely useful content
Google wants to provide people with helpful results.
Answer the questions your customers are asking.
Explain your services.
Share your knowledge.
Solve problems.
And avoid writing articles simply because you've been told you need a blog.
Useful content beats content for content's sake.
4. Make your website technically sound
Good SEO isn't just about words.
Your website should be:
Easy for Google to crawl
Mobile-friendly
Fast enough
Secure
Well structured
Easy to navigate
And tools such as Google Search Console can help you identify problems that aren't obvious when simply looking at the website.
5. Build your reputation
Google doesn't only look at your website.
Links, mentions, reviews and other trusted references can help demonstrate that your business is genuine and relevant.
For local businesses, making sure your Google Business Profile is accurate and complete is also important.
6. Think beyond Google
The ultimate goal shouldn't be:
“How do I rank higher?”
It should be:
“How do I become the best answer for the person searching for what I offer?”
If you achieve that, better visibility is much more likely to follow.
SEO is a long-term investment
There isn't usually one magic SEO fix.
It's about making lots of sensible improvements over time — and making sure your website is genuinely useful to the people you're trying to attract.
At Orange Hippo, we look at SEO alongside your website's messaging, structure and customer journey.
Because getting someone to your website is only half the job.
The other half is giving them a reason to stay — and a reason to get in touch.
